Post Operative Rehabilitation

Physical therapy is part of every orthopedic surgical procedure for people and it should be for animals as well.  In animals it is called rehabilitation therapy but the outcomes are similar.  Post operative rehabilitation therapy will help to decrease pain, inflammation, increase movement and increase overall strength.  Some of the conditions where rehabilitation therapy is commonly used are

Cruciate ligament injury (surgical - TPLO, TTA, Tightrope, Extracapsular repair)

Elbow Replacement

Total Hip Replacement

Femoral Head Ostectomy

Patellar luxations

Limb Amputation

Fractures

Joint Arthrodesis

Non Surgical Conditions

Rehabilitation therapy is also useful in other conditions.  In many cases it can improve, stabilize or slow the progression of some physical ailments that are difficult to treat.  Some of these conditions where rehabilitation therapy is commonly used are

Osteoarthritis

Generalized weakness

Obesity

Degenerative myelopathy or other neuropathy

Vestibular disease

Tendon / Ligament injury

Spinal injury / IVDD

 Fractures

Cruciate ligament injury (medical management when surgery is not an option)

Athletic conditioning for competition (obedience, agility, flyball, hunting etc)
